Green and Red

Founded in 1977, Green & Red is one of the more unique properties in Napa Valley. They farm four vineyards: Chiles Mill, Chiles Canyon, Catacula, and Tip Top, ranging from 1200-1800' in elevation. The winery and its style are a product a movement that began during the Summer of Love in Berkeley when founder, Jay Hemmingway, and his group of friends, which included Alice Waters, set out to recreate the food and beverage traditions of Europe and reintroduce the concepts of fresh ingredients and passion into California cuisine. Some of the group created places like Chez Panisse and The Cheese Board and Jay headed into the Napa hills and started planting vines. Green & Red has been a family winery from the start with Jay and his daughter, Tobin, hand bottling and corking the first vintage. Over the years, their commitment to expressing the best of what their part of Napa can offer completely unadulterated, protecting the land, and creating wines for the table has earned them a vaunted position in the wine world. Well known for their own wines, the winery also supplies fruit to some of the most sought after producers in California including Turley and Ravenswood for special vineyard designates and has provided the "house" Zinfandel to Chez Panisse for more than 20 years. Green & Red is as much a part of the history of California cuisine and the history of Napa Valley as any I can think of and, with almost 50 vintages in the books, they produce some of the most interesting and delicious wines you will find. Control of the winery has now passed to Jay's daughter, Tobin, since his passing in 2019.
